I’ll never forget that day at my mother-in-law’s. I went to pick up my 4-year-old son, and as soon as I walked in, I saw him with tears streaming down his cheeks. I rushed over, asking what happened. His response floored me, “Grandma threw away all my toys!” Behind me, I heard Margaret, my mother-in-law, say, “I spent good money on a new toy car, and all he did was give a quick ‘thanks’ before going back to his old truck. So, I taught him a lesson he needed.” That “old truck” was a gift from me to Alex, and he adored it, but now it was sitting in the trash.
