In a TikTok video that she subsequently deleted, teacher Kristin Pitzen of Orange County’s Newport Mesa School District explained why she removed the American flag from her classroom: “Because it made me uncomfortable.”
“I packed it away, but I don’t know where it is, and I haven’t found it yet,” she whispered to the camera, her laughter echoing her words.
She went on to claim that she urges her kids to “stand if you feel like it, don’t stand if you feel like it, and say the words if you want; you don’t have to say them” during the morning reading of the Pledge of Allegiance, which is a sign of national patriotism.
However, this caused an issue since the teacher’s classroom lacked a US flag, which she removed during the epidemic because it made her “feel uncomfortable,” Pitzen said in the video.
Pitzen proceeded. “However, my child today expressed, ‘It’s somewhat peculiar that we simply remain silent.” And I said, ‘Oh well, you know, I’ve got to find it; I’m working on it; I got you.’”
