Because of her size, people deemed this Miss Universe contestant, who placed in the top 20, ‘disgusting’

Jane Garrett, the first plus-sized contender in Miss Universe history to reach the top 20, received both praise and criticism during her stint in the competition. Look at the stunning photos of the beauty, who bravely addressed the negative comments made about her.

El Salvador received a lot of attention in November 2023, when the 72nd annual Miss Universe pageant welcomed candidates from 84 different countries. Among them was Jane Dipika Garrett, who represented Nepal with dignity and determination.

Garrett, who was just 22 years old, drew global attention as the first plus-sized delegate in the competition’s history, breaking down barriers in an industry traditionally characterized by traditional beauty standards.

She hails from Kathmandu and stood out in the renowned competition, which has already produced notable champions like Olivia Culpo in 2012.

She represented her nation as Miss Universe Nepal, becoming a fan favorite for her beauty and undying support.

Garrett, a nursing student, spread a strong message of inclusion by encouraging body acceptance and increasing awareness about hormonal health, PCOS, and mental health.

Her comprehensive approach to beauty, emphasizing content over style, won her worldwide appreciation. Garrett’s involvement highlighted more than her country’s position on the world scene; it represented a movement in the beauty industry toward inclusivity.

She boldly walked the runway in a metallic one-piece halterneck style during the swimwear portion. The waist ruching accentuated her shape and sent a message of body confidence.

Garrett honored her South Asian heritage with an evening outfit. She looked stunning in figure-hugging crimson and gold attire that combined history with modern flair. The elaborate pattern and vibrant colors reflected her delight in representing Nepal and its rich heritage.

Garrett, on the other hand, spoke up about the highs and lows of her historic Miss Universe 2023 run. Both achievements and setbacks marked her journey as the first plus-sized contender to reach the top 20.

During an honest interview after her withdrawal from Miss Universe 2023, Garrett discussed her issues with self-esteem, her ambition to inspire others, and the harsh criticism she received along the road.

Garrett stated that reaching the top 20 was a delightful surprise. Having previously struggled with poor self-esteem and eating issues, she viewed the achievement as immensely satisfying. “I really did not expect to get that much applause on the stage or that much spotlight,” she says.

“And I didn’t anticipate anything. I was only there to represent my nation and women throughout the world. “And that was my goal,” Garrett said.

Her time on stage, surrounded by acclaim, had a transformational impact not just on her but also on society’s notion of beauty. “I came with a humble heart, but when I won on that stage, I got the loudest applause from the whole entire audience,” she joked.

“And that felt so good because it was like a breakthrough moment for me and for society that they see something different, that they see real-size beauty,” Miss Nepal went on to say.

Garrett showed enormous delight in her accomplishments, rejoicing on Instagram with the message, “Top 20 baby! I am grateful to all of my followers and supporters. I did my best, and that’s what counts!”

The statement read, “I’m so thrilled to be representing real-size beauty all across the world and breaking down beauty pageant preconceptions. I’m extremely pleased with the new Miss Universe and will always remember this life-changing season of my life.”

Garrett’s daring inspired many, with one individual exclaiming, “Goddess!” “So beautiful,” another social media user wrote. A third scribbled “Gorgeous baby,” while a fourth commented, “You are very beautiful.”

However, her presence drew strong criticism, with several online comments attacking her appearance. “Lol, I have seen girls much prettier than her,” one user commented. “Miss Jumbo!” “Do not miss the universe,” another guy commented. A third person said, “Really!!” “I can’t find anything good about you.”

Garrett acknowledged hearing some offensive comments about her. “I read comments like ‘Oh, she’s a whale,’ or ‘That’s horrible,’” Garrett said. I am going to vomit. Or, ‘She’s encouraging obesity; why don’t you go to the gym?’ And stuff like that. And it’s as if they don’t know my tale. “They don’t even understand what I’m going through,” she acknowledged.

Garrett attributed her weight difficulties to a medical ailment known as polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), which causes hormonal imbalances and makes it difficult to maintain a stable weight. She emphasized that even looking at a slice of cake might cause us to gain weight.

Due to PCOS and hormonal difficulties, she gained a significant amount of weight, which negatively impacted her mental health and self-esteem, leading her to believe she was not adequate enough or beautiful.

Reflecting on her youth, the South Asian beauty admitted that her desire to be a model drove her to engage in destructive activities as she battled to conform to society’s expectations.

“When I was younger, I aspired to be a model and would starve myself. Garrett said that she struggled with food problems and mental health concerns as a youngster because she aspired to be a model.

“All the girls around me were very thin, especially when you’re a teenager, because that’s just their body type,” she said. I would often compare myself to many of the girls there, feeling inadequate.

Garrett finally learned to accept herself, stating, “I had to erase all of the messages that were coming from both society and my own head.” Therefore, I had to retrain my mind to embrace and cherish my true self.

Once on the Miss Universe platform, she opted not to let the criticism interfere with her purpose. “[The detractors are] just judging me based on social media, which is their issue,” she stated. I don’t let it bother me. Society can be quite harsh at times. “People can be cruel at times,” she explained.

Despite the criticism, Garrett remained dedicated to altering beauty standards and encouraging body positivity. “For me, body positivity represents whatever body you’re in. You accept it, love yourself, and embrace who you are, but you’re also working toward a healthier lifestyle,” she explained.

Garrett returned to the runway in April 2024, impressing audiences with a glittery bodycon dress, demonstrating her persistent confidence and advocacy.

Jane Garrett’s journey in the 72nd Miss Universe pageant was about more than just competing; it was about breaking stereotypes and inspiring change.

Her tenacity left an unforgettable influence on the beauty business, demonstrating that true beauty defies size and that authenticity always shines brightest.
